I'm really beginning to love politics. Politics is really great except for one thing... since I'm just now jumping into the political ring, I am kind of behind on political history. I know my issues and my ideology, just not my history. I find I get myself into trouble with this quite often. This summer I am going to try to build up my storage of knowledge... we'll see what happens...

How come when ever a vehicle goes to break down, it's either on the way to school, or when you're in a rush? The power stearing pump on our van started to give out on us this morning, just down the road from our house. Since my dad has been dealing with a blood clot, he can't exactly get around to do it very well, so I'll probably end up doing it for him tomorrow morning. What a way to spend my first day of summer! Teachers still have school tomorrow. Being as my parents are both teachers, they'll end up going to their schools tomorrow.
Last night I went up to Travis High School with my dad (where he works as the Orchestra Director) and I helped him file music. It wasn't as easy as just filing musc. Travis has gained a lot of new music, meaning the existing music had to be transfered to new filing cabinet drawers. My dad and I were up at Travis for about an hour and a half. 1.5 hrs of work times two people, that makes 3 hours of work. Why am I so tired today? After we were done, my dad and I spent another hour driving around downtown Austin and photographing things. I was able to get a few really good pictures of the capitol and the UT tower.

and...
I can't think of anything to write.

Robert still isn't feeling very well. I was studying with my dad for my Biology final, when we hear this screaming cry. I rush out to see my brother in tears, holding his throat, saying "it hurts, my throat hurts, it hurts so bad". He's kept it together so well. I don't blame him for crying. Poor little guy!
My mom is at Six Flags Fiesta Texas with her middle school orchestra that she directs. My family was going to go with her, but with my brother sick, and with more finals to study, it wasn't an option. My dad is still trying to get over blood clots superficial veins that he has been battling since the beginning of this month/ end of last month. So, that leaves my brother Joseph, my dog, and I to fend for ourselves. I'm the only responsible one around, so I'm constantly being called on to help people. "I'm hungry!, Will you get him to be quiet?, Could you do me a favor?, Can I have another soda?, Can you hand me the remote?, Joseph!!!, Rmmm..., I think my medicine is wearing out and I still have a few more hours to wait!, Bark! Bark!" Poor Joseph is having to find things to do. Happy has been booted off of the couch, his usual napping place, so that Robert could sleep there. All this time, I'm trying to keep people happy and finish studying for my Biology final.
I wish I could be at Fiesta Texas with my mom.

My mom took Robert to a clinic that is open on Sundays so that if anything could be done, he'd be feeling better in time for the last week of school. Unfortunately there really wasn't much that could be done. It turns out Robert has the summer flu. What a bummer! The last week of school, and he has the flu! Being in 6th grade, the last week of school is supposed to be the best!!! And he's sick for it. For once, I actually feel really sorry for him. (I know that sounds horrible, but he's kinda deserved getting sick in the past...) Robert is dealing with this really well. I can't wait for him to start feeling better... wait... that means he'll be back to his annoying self... AUGH!!!

When I was younger, I used to think of my brother as a completely immature little brat. I've found I am starting to grow out of that. However, my brother is now viewing my second brother as I used to view him. I try to just remain calm and tell myself it's just a phase. I know he will grow out of this eventually.
This evening my brother and I went to go see Alexander Nevsky. It was really good, except for one thing. My brother Robert was feeling really miserable. He got so miserable and frustrated at one point that I felt bad for him when he started to cry. Everytime my brother starts to cry in public, I just think "what a brat, he needs to grow up". He just had so much pain apparent in his face. I felt so bad for him. I almost wanted to cry for him. Alexander Nevsky was a two hour 1930's movie with no intermission, and the movie hadn't even begun.
Robert leaned over onto my shoulder several times through the night. It helped him feel better. It was nice to feel his warm body up against mine, for it was starting to get a little chilly, and my blouse was just a lacy overgarment on top of a tank. It felt really good to have someone who was so close to me lying up against my shoulder. (Once again, I can't wait to have a boyfriend. I can't wait to be the one lying up against his shoulder when I feel bad or just because.)
When Robert wasn't lying on my shoulder, he was sitting up very still, which is a rare thing since Robert is ADD. I watched him while he watched the screen. I kept thinking to myself how much I've been away from my family lately, even when I was at home. Robert had grown up so much. He wasn't the little twit I once knew. He was much older now. He turned twelve yesterday. Why did that just seem to make Robert look so much older. I could see why in some countries Robert would be thought of as "of age". It almost scared me to see how much he had grown. I remeber 12 years ago going to the hospital with my grandparents and seeing my brand new baby brother. It's one of the earliest memories I have. 12 years later, here he was sitting in a concert with me looking so much more mature. What had happened? Where had I been all this time?

Saturdays were not made to study for Biology or for Finals (or both). I'm done with Pre-AP 1 English. The final was on Friday. Tuesday I have Orchestra and Biology. Wednesday I have Geometry and PE (which actually is a written test). To end my Freshman year, I have Spanish 1 and Choir. I get to end my Freshman year with Choir. Of all classes to end the year, the one I won't have next year. I know that this means it will be over and I will get to move on, but that's gonna be kinda hard. I'm sure anyone reading this is deathly bored out of their mind. Choir just seems to be the only thing I think about lately. Did I make the right choice? Yes, but that doesn't mean I can't be sad for leaving it. Oh well. Next year will begin a whole new year. I will get to start anew.

I'm becoming very attached to Bach's first cello suite. It seems to be the only joy in my life right now. It seems to be the only thing I can sit down to and loose myself in. It's what I really need right now. I'm shutting myself in from the rest of the world. At the rate things are going, soon enough I won't even be writing on my blog. I'm just shutting the world out, and I can't stop myself. Soon my cello will be my only friend, and the first Bach cello suite will be my only song. Why am I degrading like this? I wish I could answer that.

There's this girl named Charlie in my Geometry class. Today we were doing reviews for the Final and she kept singing. I felt like I wanted to crumple into a ball and die. I want to sing. I want to sing so badly. I wanted to cry. Sam Bass was sitting nearby and he started singing along. I sooned joined in. Sam doesn't know I'm quitting choir yet. I dread seeing his reaction when he finds out. I'm pretty sure he thinks I have a marvelous voice (which I don't).
Next school year is going to be pretty screwed without choir. That's pretty much guarinteed. I hope I find another choir to be in.

I talked to an old friend from middle school yesterday over the phone. She informed me that another friend of mine from middle school was 9 months pregnant. When she was 14, she had a 23 year old boyfriend. I just hope it's the same guy and that they are still together. I just hope the best for her. I want to scream at her. She was educated enough too. She knew better.

Burning a Bible is disgusting. It's like the KKK burning crosses. It is just disturbing. I was sitting in choir today when I heard Danny Cohen and Sam Bass talking with a group of folks about 2 guys who were taking the orange covered Giddians Bibles and burning them (or at least were talking of doing so). I heard Bianca saw the whole thing and heard she was disgusted and left. I doubt that Danny and Sam knew I was listening, but they did when I finally spoke up. I sat up from hunching over some school work and said softly "Good for her". I got the response of "What?" and I said it again, this time louder. "Good for her."
It disgusts me as to how people can laugh about a thing like this. It makes me want to vomit. Such vulgar behavior I can hardly handle. I wanted to vomit just sitting in the choir room listening to such direspect. You can't be prejudice against African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and Others. You can't be prejudice against Muslims, Jews, Budists, and others. BUT YOU CAN BE PREJUDICE AGAINST WHITES AND CHRISTIANS. Hold a gun to my head, ask me if I am a Christian, and I will answer yes. Jesus means more to me than my life.

I know deep down inside that quitting choir was the right thing to do, but I keep feeling bad for doing so. I know I'm going to study privately, but still, I'm not going to be able to sing with my choir friends. My voice was really starting to crack when I decided to quit. Not even a week later, I can sing again like I once could... no boundaries. My voice was getting a lot of tension in it and I was really tearing up my vocal chords. I know that Mr. Raymond tries his hardest to not be effected by his students desicions, but still, I keep thinking that I disappointed him and really hurt him. I feel really bad. Some might say I'm having second thoughts. It's not second thoughts, it's just having a hard time letting a part of my life go. After singing since 1st/2nd grade, letting something this big go is like sautering a limb of your body. It really hurts (even if it's not physical pain). I keep trying to look on the bright side, but I can't always do so. It's like trying to find an air pocket in the ocean. Things just seem to be getting worse. I need to get over this. I know, I know. At least I can take debate like I wanted to? Even that doesn't cheer me up much. I have to get over this. I have to get over it now.

I talked to Mr. Raymond today, so now I can finally make it official. I'm not going to continue choir at McCallum. Mr. Raymond always said that if you were not happy in his choral program, that we do not have to be in his choir, and that it wouldn't offend him. I pulled him aside afterschool today. I restated what he had always told us about being happy in choir, going on to tell him that I was not happy in choir at McCallum. He did not seem mad at me. He smiled, although I could sense a little disappointment about him. He told me I had a nice voice, but to do what I thought was right. Thus I am.
So, I'm not going to be in choir at McCallum. It's official. It feels like something is missing. This has been weighing on my shoulders all school year. Now the weight of it all is gone. It's done. No more MAC choir for me. I will try to continue singing outside of school.
All this comes the day after the last and only choir concert of this school year. My mom had not gotten to hear me sing all school year. My mom wasn't there that night. She had to direct her middle school orchestra at thier concert. We got to the last song, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, and the song ends in a beautiful amen harmony. Amen, the end. I felt like I was saying good-bye choir. This was it. I struggled to keep tears back.
We finished and I dressed out of my choir formal rather quickly. I turned it in and rejoined my dad and brother in the theater. Hardly anyone was left in there. It was just Mr. Raymond and a few other adults. I couldn't keep the tears back at that point. I did the best I could and I tried to leave by the theater exit, but it was locked. I quickly rushed out of the fine arts building doors, holding my program in front of my face, so that no one would notice my tear stained cheeks. It was at this point I knew the answer to my question. Do I quit choir or stay? This is all I have been thinking of, day and night, for the last week or two.
I cried all the way home. I had nearly regained my composure when we picked up my mom, but then she laid her gentle hand on my shoulder and I lost my composure once again. When we got home, my mom helped comfort me.
I spent the rest of the evening, and until 5:30 am coloring my two tessellations for Geometry. I then went to bed and woke back up at 7am for school. It was during second period when I realized I had forgotten to eat breakfast. It was during the bell at the end of lunch that I realized I hadn't eaten lunch. I still hadn't even finished my Dr. Pepper I had gotten from the gas station before school. Thankfully, English presentations sometimes involve food handouts. I ate a snack bag of goldfish and half a brownie. I just wasn't hungry all day. I forced myself to eat dinner, 2 hot dogs and potato salad. I then passed out for an hour, my head on my mother's shoulder. After that, I took a 3 hour nap. Now I'm so tired, but I'm wired.
I'm still having such a hard time imagining life without school choir. I've been in a school choir since 4th grade back at Brentwood. It's going to be hard for me this next year. At least now I can take debate as I wanted to, but wasn't going to because of lack of room in my schedual. I hope I didn't hurt Mr. Raymonds feelings at all. He won't hold a grudge, but at the same time, I know he wasn't expecting me to quit... me of all people...
Choir has been the root of my latest depressing mood. I even went as far as cutting myself. I ended up getting really hooked on caffine. The caffine need went overboard. I probably would have started thinking suicide had a friend not just had a rough brush with that. I feel so much better now. It's crazy. Now, lets see how I handle having to tell all my friends that I'm quiting MAC choir...

Choir is eating me alive inside. If things keep going as they have been, I'm going to be forced to quit choir, for sanity's sake. Choir has forced me into tears on several occaisions this school year. If things keep going as they have, I'll end up with a nervous break down.
I've been singing since 4th grade, only taking 6th grade off to get in my PE credits. Actually, I've been singing longer than that. I remeber being in about 1st or 2nd grade and being in the children's choir at Grace Covenant Church. That means I've been in choir more than I've been in orchestra!!! Although I started playing cello at the end of 2nd grade, I did not officially start until 5th grade. Wow. More choir than orchestra. I always thought of it the other way around. Quite a revelation.
Saturday was the audition for next year's choral chair placement (which of the two choirs you go into). A few days before the audition, a few of my peers came up to me and said I had a great chance of making the top choir, that I was talented and had a great voice. Monday rolled around and results were not final and public yet. However, Mr.Raymond, (the choral director), started to name the top students in each section. When he reached the soprano section, this girl starts crying before she even finds out what her chair is just because a friend of mine made 3rd chair. (Later she found out that it was an error and was really 5th chair.) This girl, Emma McNairy, made 4th chair. All I could think is how spoiled rotten she was acting. As Mr. Raymond continued to name the top students in the 1st choir, I got this gut feeling that I hadn't made the cut.
We were schedualed to have a Cinco de Mayo Pep Ralley after this class, so as we were locking away our backpacks in locked rooms, I aproached Mr. Raymond. I asked him what I should expect as far as my placement. Mr. Raymond looked in my eyes with true sincerity and replied KnightingGales, the second choir. My gut feeling was correct. I was crushed, but hid it as best I could. I should be greatful I was at least in choir. I was not going to show my grief as long as anyone was present. Hearing all this, Sam Bass, who had achieved 1st chair Bass/Baritone, came up to me outside of the classroom with a look on his face of sheer shock. You have such a nice voice and are so talented, is the basic gist of what he told me. I really look up to Sam accademically and chorally. Several more people told me that I definately should have made the top choir. One said they had heard one of the top sopranos sing and that it was definately not as good as I had probably done. Mr. Raymond had said I had ranked low partially becase my tape had been so hard to hear. I could have kept it together if it wasn't for Sam's comment after Emma's outburst into crying. It was really just too much for me.
When I got online I congratulated my friend for how well she had done. I also broke down into tears twice. I was really happy for my friend. She had worked so hard and had such talent. She deserved what she got. Still, tears streamed down my face. Whenever I made contact with my family I just acted extremely tired and kept myself either in a showdow or sillhouetted. No one noticed, thankfully, and I went to be early.
The next day was really too much for me. Choir rolled around and Mr. Raymond once again talked about the auditions. I was really stung. I had to excuse myself from the room to go get water. It was really just to chill out. All day my friends and family tried to comfort me. Auditions are never fair, Lucinda told me. My mom said that God must have a purpose for me in the second choir. Maybe Mr. Raymond really needs me there. I still cannot see how. My solution is to just quit choir and join debate, but I want to be able to sing. I want to sing so badly.
When I got home, my mom said I looked as though I was about to cry. I was, but I would never have admitted it. I just told her I was tired. We ran over to HEB and I fell fast asleep. I was glad to fall asleep. I felt as though I was about to puke. Puke from what, I do not know. It could have been stress, it could have been hunger, it could have been frustration, it could have been trying to hold back tears, or it could have been choir. I don't know. I just fell fast asleep and was glad to do so.
This morning, Mr. Raymond posted the official results of who had made the top choir. My name wasn't there. I looked another 7 times. My name still wasn't there. It hadn't changed. I knew it wouldn't change. I was where I was. Many a time I rushed around the fine arts building. I'd continuously make a round of the orchestra room, the choir room, the water fountain, and back to the orchestra room. As I'd enter the orchestra room, I'd swing the door open with such frustration and let it slam behind me. As I'd leave, I'd slam the door shut. Dabbs saw my frustration and asked what was wrong. When I tried to explain, he did not understand. He understood my words, but not my feelings. I was crushed. At lunch, I just walked around the perimeter of the orchestra room straitening the pictures on the wall as I went. They should look straiter now.
In choir I talked all period to Ferid. He's only like 13 or 14, and I find him an incredible person. He may be young, but he has a brain. He told me that Emma really did not sound that good. He was surprised at her chairing. Ferid and I talked of many other things, but most importantly he made me feel much better. He could have chosen anyone to talk to, yet he chose me. He could have said well, you've always got next year to audition, but instead he told me how much he though I should have made it. I felt I really mattered.
Why does a person who has worked so hard not do well? Why does someone who has given thier all fail to succeed? Why when someone has shed blood, sweat, tears, hours, and sleep not rank with the same type of people in thier class? Why do people who could care less about choir rank above someone who has dedicated thier life to music, not just choral? I'm really happy for those that made it. I just wanted to be with them. How will I ever become better if I'm always the best in the group that I'm in? I may be a strong sightreader, but in the real world, sightreading won't matter. What will matter is talent, my ability to sing.
I love to sing. I find so much joy in singing. It means the world to me. When I sing, I'm in a world unlike any other. The bad thing is the students who don't care. I want to be in a class of students that really care. I want to be able to sing and not worry about having to keep the section in tune. I'm better than this... why doesn't it show? I just want to be better. I'm not like other choir students. I want to be a choir member, not a diva or divo. I want to sing with harmony and more than just one other part. I want to SING. If I quit choir now, I will have to quit singing. Instead of singing, I would join debate. I really want to take debate, but I think choir is more what I need. If I quit choir, I will take debate. I just want to be a little better than I am. Is that too much to ask? Choir is eating me alive inside.

The one present that I did not recieve from my brothers, parents, or grandparents, was a picture of Ronald and Nancy Reagan standing in the entrance of Air Force One--"Spirit of '76". It has really cool facts on the back. James, this sophmore in my Geometry and Spanish classes, gave it to me. It was really sweet of him to do this for me. We have this debate going as to which president was better: Ronald Reagan or Theodore Roosevelt. I say Reagan. James says Roosevelt. As soon as I get a frame, I'm going to frame the picture and hang it on my wall.
